Protests Erupt in Kathmandu Over Kulman Ghising’s Dismissal as NEA Chief
Protests erupted in Kathmandu following the government’s decision to remove Kulman Ghising from his position as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Demonstrations took place along the Maitighar-Baneshwar area, with protesters condemning the dismissal and displaying placards with slogans such as, “Where is the government heading? Cutting electricity and removing Kulman.”
Security personnel in riot gear were deployed by authorities as protesters attempted to breach barricades near Baneshwar, close to the Parliament building.
Ghising, who was appointed in 2021, was dismissed by the Cabinet on Monday, and Hitendra Dev Shakya was named as his successor. His removal follows months of tension with the government over issues such as recovering unpaid dues from companies, an energy deal with India, and accusations of insubordination.
Despite facing criticism from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Energy Minister Dipak Khadka, Ghising defended his actions to recover outstanding payments from industries and clarified his stance multiple times.
The government’s decision has sparked backlash not only from opposition parties but also from within the ruling Nepali Congress. Ghising has vowed to challenge the dismissal in court. The future of the NEA remains uncertain, and the impact of this leadership change on Nepal’s power sector is yet to be seen.
